Towards the end decade of the 20th century, there were many Syro-Malabar catholic families and nursing students residing in and around the Abids area of Hyderabad. In the year 1997, few of them along with Fr. Jose, C.M.I. approached Mont Fort Brothers and got the permission to celebrate Syro-Malabar Malayalam Qurbana in one of their premises (Little Flower School) on every second Sunday of the month. This was the only Malayalam mass in Hyderabad area after the CMI Bhavan in Trimulghery in Secunderabad, where it started one year earlier. People numbering 250-350 from different locations attended the mass with great enthusiasm, and celebrated anniversary with great zeal.
Later, this was shifted to St. Thomas Church, Sultan Bazaar in the year 1999 with the permission of Arch Bishop of Hyderabad Late. Most Rev. Marampudi Joji and accept- ed by late.Rev.Fr. Dominic Sylvester, the only notified Malayalam mass in the liturgical guide of Arch diocese of Hyderabad and it was known as St. Thomas Church Syro-Malabar Community. All the parishioners and parish priests of the time very cordially welcomed & cooperated in the smooth conduct of the Holy mass. We have our gratitude to Holy spirit fathers whom the charges were given initially and all the priests who served holy mass later for us. Fr. Jose Mathew S.J. has taken the strain to come from long distance to serve holy mass for a period of more than two years. The appointment of Fr. Johnson as the in- charge of this community by Santhom Mission Hyderabad was a turning point. The tireless work of Fr. Johnson has brought the scattered families of the surrounding areas together under one umbrella and inquisitive of the advantages of having mass at least on every Sundays and giving Catechism to the children with pastoral care. Consequently, we approached the nearby CSI church sultan bazaar and after a sequence of correspondence with the authorities from both the side we got the permission to conduct Holy Qurbana in the CSI church on every Sunday, Since then the activities of the centre have doubled.
In the month of November 2017 the church community, with the approval of Santhom mission coordinators-Fr. Francis Eluvathingal and Fr. Abraham Tarmashery, decided to have the name of St.Kuriakose Elias as the patron saint of this centre.
We have two trustees and a five-member committee for the smooth conduct of the church activities. Though the centre is situated in a high valued area, with the same thrust and zeal of the community, we are confident that we would be in a position to have our own built church soon.
Everybody take active participation in all the church activities. At present we have the following activities:
1) Catechism for nearly 20 students at 11:30 AM on every Sunday 2) Holy Mass at 10:00 AM on every Sunday 3) A half an hour adoration at 8pm on every Saturday
To the proud of our catechism children, Sr. Claris CMC has joined us recently in teaching the students.
